Burrowing owls are so named because they live underground in burrows; these owls (Athene cunicularia) are covered in brown spotted feathers, have long legs, sport distinctive white “eyebrows” above bright yellow eyes, and are one of the smallest owls in North America.

On a recent trip to Marco Island FL, I happened upon some of these owls in a marked, protected area. It was my first encounter with these beautiful birds…
